"This course helps me understand myself better as an adult TCK."
The term TCK (Third Culture Kid) encapsulates the unique cultural identity of children who grow up between their culture of origin (sometimes referred to as their home or passport culture) and the culture of the host culture they live in. This creates a distinct ‘third culture’ that is not solely a fusion of the two but an entirely separate cultural space for that individual.
In this session, we look at characteristics that are typically associated with children growing up as TCKs. We explore the complexities, joys and challenges that may arise from living in a place outside of your culture of origin (ie your parent's culture or passport culture).
In this part, we look at what we need to focus on, as carers of TCKs, to allow children to thrive. Parents, teachers, peers, and anyone associated with TCKs have many opportunities to influence a TCKs' experience, in positive and constructive ways. We discuss how to create a framework of positive childhood experiences that are essential for holistic support to a child growing up as a third culture kid.
Here are 3 simple keys to remember when supporting children who are navigating a change in location, school, home or culture. Although challenging – these changes are not necessarily a negative experience, however, with the right support and planning, parents, carers and teachers can ensure that children are supported to re-engage quickly toward positive life experiences in a new location, and even re-entering their passport culture.
In this final section of the course, we highlight a few key biblical promises about our identity being rooted in a God who loves us, and how this truth can provide a solid foundation when dealing with the many changes experienced by TCKs.

Ben is our Dean of Studies. Growing up as a missionary kid had a range of challenges, not least when he returned 'home' to the UK and found he didn't really fit in. Ever since, Ben has held a range of educational and missional posts, and we're delighted to have him on board with us at FieldPartner! He's currently based in Sri Lanka with his wife Shiyani and their two children.
